Exemptions

If you believe that you have reasons for applying for exemption, such as exemption to exceed the maximum number of pages stipulated, exemption for late submission, etc., you must always contact the lecturer responsible for the course/exam. Usually, this will be your supervisor. If you do not have a direct supervisor for the examination in question, you must instead contact the course lecturer or, ultimately, the anchor teacher.

Remember that exemption applications must include specific reasons (objective reasons). Simply asking for more time to finish an assignment with better results is not sufficient reason for being granted exemption. This calls for specific reasons affecting your working process. Perhaps you require more time to process your empirical data than you could have predict beforehand – and you must be able to provide argumentation for this.

Before submitting your written application to the Chair of the Study Board, you must submit the application to your supervisor/lecturer who will then assess whether your application contains the information required for the Study Board/Director of Studies to make a final assessment.  When your supervisor/lecturer has assessed your application, you must send it to Study Secretary Jette Due Nielsen in Aalborg or Study Secretary Karen Holm Greve in Copenhagen and copy in your lecturer. Please state your lecturer’s recommendation in the email.

Your lecturer may refuse to support your application, usually if he/she deems it not to be viable. If you disagree with this decision, you may still submit the application; however, you are advised to carefully consider your lecturer’s arguments.

Please use the form for exemption applications in Moodle (ind Danish). Please fill out the form and submit it to the study secretary.

An exemption application must be submitted within reasonable time. Thus, submitting an application for late submission within three days of your deadline is not acceptable and will most always be cause for rejection. (Please note that other rules apply in case of illness, cf. the below.) Similar rules apply to exemption from the number of pages stipulated. In any circumstances, you must remember that you are never entitled for your application to be processed in very short notice. In most cases this is virtually impossible.

Exemptions for late submission and/or postponing examinations:

An exemption for late submission and/or for postponing an examination requires for the lecturer and external examiner to approve that the exam will be rescheduled; the exam will usually be rescheduled to take place a few days later than originally planned. Moreover, winter exams (excluding re-examinations and re-examinations due to illness) must be completed by the end of January and summer exams must be completed by the end of June. According to the Faculty’s regulations, exemptions for late submissions and/or postponing examinations will only be granted if the conditions stipulated above are met.

Please note: Re-examinations due to illness are NOT exemptions. In case you fall ill and this will affect your submission deadline and your scheduled examination, you must contact the secretariat.

If you are unsure whether you will be able to meet your submission deadline, it is always a good idea to discuss the matter with your supervisor and perhaps also your student counsellor. In case you have failed to pass your exam and wish to take a re-examination, the student counsellors can guide you.
